Andean Climbing Overview

Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru . . .

We have made seven trips to the Andes Range from 2001 through 2011, including one trip to Argentina, three to Bolivia, and three to Peru. A summary of our South American climbs is as follows:

  • Bolivia 2001 - a guided trip to Bolivia's Cordillera Real outside of La Paz. A climb of Huyana Potosi followed by climbs of Pequeno Alpmayo and Piramide Blanca, both in the spectacular Condorri Cirque.

  • Peru 2004 - a climb of Nevado Pisco in the Llanganuco Valley followed by climbs in the Ischinca Valley including Nevados Ischinca and Urus.

  • Peru 2005 - an attempt on Nevado Chopicalqui followed by a trek to the Alpa Mayo Base Camp and climb of Nevado Millisaraju in an adjacent valley.

  • Bolivia 2006 - a trek down the length of the southern half of Bolivia's remote Apolobamba Range, starting at Pelechuco and ending at Curva. Climbs en route of Nevados Sunchulli and Posnanski near Lago Kotani and then a climb of Nevado Cavayani in the vicinity of Nevado Cuchillo.

  • Bolivia 2007 - our goal of climbing La Cabeza de Condor turned into a salmanella festival that included an icy ascent of Pequeno Alpamayo and a subsequent retreat to Lake Titicaca and the Isla del Sol.

  • Argentina 2010 - a trek up the Rio Colorado, 80 miles north of Aconcagua, to ascend 21k Cerro Ramada, our high point to date.

  • Peru 2011 - we left the beaten Cordillera Blanca track for the less climbed Cordillera Vilcanota and ascents of Cerro Campa I and Cero Lliani and an attempt of Nevado Mariposa, a.k.a. Santa Catalina.
