2006 Apolobamba ExpeditionA Day in La Paz and Return to the U.S.A.
We stopped in the American Airlines office the afternoon of our arrival back in town to see if we could get out the next morning. No such luck as not only was the plane full but American Airlines was going to add a second daily flight to and fro La Paz the following week. We slept in late and then breakfasted at Alexander's before going back to the hotel to pack up all the gear. Once the work was done, we headed to the uptown area of La Paz to find the Europa Hotel where the guidebook said a day's entry to the athletic club could be had for $9. True enough but we were interested in more than a hot sauna . . . our sights were set on a massage to work out the remnants of the ride from Curva to Charazani. We made a reservation for two massages at 4 p.m. and then caught lunch at the Europa's dining room. Good feed complete, we were off on foot to wander uptown to the Sagarniga area to cover the needs of the "bring me something from Bolivia" crowd. We hit the witch's market area, picked up a dozen alpaca hats and G bought a dozen amulets for his co-workers. Alpaca gloves for my Mrs. and then we were back to the Europa for a rub. A massage after two weeks on the ground and 45 minutes in the that pick-up truck out of Curva was just what the doctor ordered. The club has lap pool, dry sauna, wet sauna and a couple of gals that can work out the kinks. After we were turned to jello, we showered and headed back to the Calacoto and out for our final dinner before leaving all too early the next morning for the U.S. and home.
